Most people think defeating a Dark Lord would be the most defining moment of their life. For a long time, I thought that too. But I’ve come to realize that the events which shaped me most weren’t the battles or the victories —they were the quiet moments in between, where I had to decide who I wanted to be when no prophecy was pointing the way.
I spent most of my childhood living in a cupboard under the stairs. My aunt and uncle made it very clear that I didn’t belong. They told me I was ordinary, and treated me like I was less than that. So when I found out I was a wizard, I thought I had finally found where I belonged. Hogwarts became more than a school to me — it was home. There, I learned about magic, friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice. I also learned about grief, fear, and the weight of expectations.
At eleven, I faced a mountain troll. At twelve, a basilisk. By the time I was seventeen, I had buried mentors and friends. War forces you to grow up fast, but it doesn’t teach you what to do when the war is over. After Voldemort fell, I didn’t know who I was without him. There was no more prophecy, no more destiny…just choices.
I chose to return to school, not to relive old glories, but to understand what I had missed. Rather than focus solely on Defense textbooks, I dug into history, philosophy, and even Muggle literature. I found comfort in words, ideas, and questions without simple answers. I began to see magic not just as a weapon, but as a lens through which we can understand the world and each other.
Now, I want to explore the Muggle world the way I once explored the magical one — with curiosity and an open mind. I’m applying to university not because I need to learn spells or potions, but because I want to learn why people do what they do, how societies heal after trauma, and how knowledge can be used not just to fight evil, but to build something better.
I don’t have a traditional academic record. My test scores probably won’t reflect the full scope of my abilities (unless there’s an O.W.L. section). But I bring something else: the perspective of someone who’s faced fear and chosen hope, who’s been given power and chosen humility, and who’s seen the worst in people but still believes in their capacity for good.
I’m not applying as the Boy Who Lived. I’m applying as Harry — a student who’s still learning, and who is ready for a new kind of adventure.
